Whether you’re a die-hard Classic Kelly Show fan or maybe you just happened to tune in that Monday afternoon, you know that I brought out my inner runway model at the YSU EveryBODY Fashion Show. This event was put together by the Fashion Department in Cushwa. What really caught my eye was the amazing cause this was for. This fabulous show’s goal was to spread awareness about eating disorders. It took place in the Chestnut Room in Kilcawley Center on April 15th and was a free event. Rookery Radio’s very own DJ Playfresh played awesome tunes while the models strutted their stuff on the catwalk.
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been into dressing up and looking like a princess. I used to watch America’s Next Top Model religiously and wondered what it was like to be a part of something like that. I’m on the shorter side, so I never believed I’d have my moment in the spotlight, walking down the catwalk. Then, I heard about this amazing event through my Fashion 101 correspondent Rex. Once I heard about this, I knew I had to either attend or actually be a part of it. Of course, school work got in the way and I completely forgot about the event for a while. Then, a week before the show, I saw a flyer for the EveryBODY fashion show and I hurried up and messaged the person in charge. Fortunately, they were able to squeeze me in.
Finally, that day finally arrived. As I walked out of my last class on that chilly, rainy April afternoon (April showers bring May flowers, right?), I walked right to the Chestnut room so I could get in that final fitting for the three outfits I was put in. Let me tell you, I had never seen YSU so fashionable before! Designer clothes, gowns, and active wear! I felt like I was walking the runway for Vera Wang or something! Nevertheless, I was pretty excited to feel (and look) like a sassy supermodel. The models were to arrive by 3 that afternoon for a final fitting. Since it was my first time ever walking in a fashion show, I HAD to practice my walk. After that, it was time for hair and makeup. A few lovely independent ULTA make-up artists made looking like a princess, possible. After that, it was time to get my hair all glamorous! Two of the Fashion Students in charge of this event, did the model’s hair. By the time my hair was done, it was less than 10 minutes until the show.
The Chestnut Room was looking SUPER fabulous! Once the models (including me) were lined up in their order, it was time to start the Spring Collection. My heart felt as if it was pounding straight out of my chest! I had never been so excited, nervous, and anxious. Once my tiny self, stepped on to that run way, I looked at the HUGE crowd and the smile was not wiped off my face. Occasionally, I looked at my feet to make sure I was hitting all my X’s and not tripping in the high wedges I was wearing (no model down, fortunately). Before I knew it, it was time for my TWO outfits for the Summer Collection. These outfits were FAB-U-LOUS! I strutted down the runway and when I came back, I was officially done. As excited as I was to finally get some downtime, I wanted to get back up there and model more. Such an adrenaline!
When the active wear, formal, prom, and bridal collections were done, it was time to walk out as a group. The goofy person I am, I grabbed the YSU pom-poms and shimmied to Pharrell’s “Happy”. After that was done, it was time to pack up and head on out.
In conclusion, this experience was one of the most memorable experiences of my life thus far. If you’re like me and dream of your moment to shine and look good while doing it…this show is exactly what you need. It’s for a fantastic cause, and no matter your size, shape, race, or style…they want YOU! I made some awesome friends that day and I know you will too. I can’t wait to do this next year and I hope to see you there as well! Remember, WORK what you got and stay fabulous!
